Metadata retrieval for PDFs fails/does not terminate

2.0B3 I have not had a successful retrieval of metadata for a pdf for some days now. I end up cancelling the operation after some minutes. The progress bar does not progress at all. This did work very well in earlier beta.

    Is there a way in 2.0b4 to get a pdf recognised as a pdf, short of opening in a browser plugin (which I don't use)? Drag and drop or 'store copy of file' both result in unindexed, apparently typeless, items.
