I'm working on a large document in Microsoft Word for Mac 2011, Version 14.7.2. For several days now I'm not able to insert new citations. Then the following message appears:

"Ein Fehler ist beim Update Ihres Dokuments aufgetreten.

citationByIndex[i].sortedItems is undefined"

When I open a new word document, I'm able to insert new citations. When I copy the content of my large document into a new word document, I'm not able to insert new citations anymore.

Does anybody know this problem and could help me?

I'd be very thankful!!

If you are running a version of Zotero earlier than 5.0.43, you should update to the latest. Also, it is worth stopping Word and (re)installing the word processor plugin via Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processors.

(If you have done both of those things and still get the error, someone closer to the center of things will be along later.)

Could you follow step 8 of debugging broken documents instructions and send a broken snippet to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?

I'm using the 5.0.43 version.

I think the error first occured after I haven't opened the document for maybe 3 months. (I think there was a Zotero update in the meantime.) It seemed that Zotero had a problem with refreshing the citations or rather it seemed to have a problem with those citations which I altered - more than 3 months ago - by hand through the editor tool.

Anyhow - after having read the comment of fbennett - I installed the Microsoft Word Add-IN. It was not installed (anymore?).

And now I'm able to insert new citations again!!

It takes quite a while to insert the new citations though. It seems that "Zotero has to work very hard" to be able to insert them. So I'm not sure if the problem is really fixed or not. But it works for now. If the problem occurs again, I will follow the step adomasven proposed.
