Word Plugin & database

edited March 30, 2018
I have a MacBook air and using Zotero with word. I am having two issues:

- Plugin is not able to generate citations OR bibliographies anymore (it works with new documents but it is not working with documents it use to work with before and I tried copy pasting the text, which already has previously added citations in text, but it is not working) this is a document I used track change option with but this setting is not on anymore.

- The bibliography that was generated doesn't follow the APA style I set and sometimes the citations are generated with different styles within the same document. (the bibliography also includes "retrieved on .... " but I set it so it does not include this information in the settings.

we'd need more precise details on this:
    1. "is not able to generate citations... anymore" -- what exactly happens when you try? (also, if you're getting an error, we'd want an error report ID as per the above link)

    2. "doesn't follow the APA style" - do you have examples for this?

    3. ..."but I set it so it does not include this information" - not sure which setting you're referring to here? There's not setting in Zotero to disable accessed dates.
  • Hey, thanks for your reply :

    1. I just figured out how to fix this, I went into the Zotero plugin "set document preferences" and checked 'automatically update citations' it seems this was unchecked while i was editing the file.

    2. I aslo set the vancouver style and it reset all the citations and bibliography to that style so having that automatic update unchecked may have caused some of the inconsistencies.

    3. I cant remember where that setting was but even with the current vancouver style I am still seeing in some fo the references from the bibliography
Like in this citation for example
" Bronfenbrenner U, Morris PA. The Bioecological Model of Human Development. In: Handbook of Child Psychology [Internet]. John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; 2007 [cited 2015 Dec 12]. Available from: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9780470147658.chpsy0114/abstract "

in the APA style it looks like this :
"Bronfenbrenner, Urie, & Morris, P. A. (2007). The Bioecological Model of Human Development. In Handbook of Child Psychology. John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Retrieved from http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9780470147658.chpsy0114/abstract"

Is there anyway of stopping it from adding this information in the generated bibliography ?
  • Not without removing the URL from the record or modifying the citation style, no. Why would you want to remove the URL? Apparently you consulted the online copy, so linking to it is appropriate.
  • Yeah I want to remove this extra information :
    " [cited 2015 Dec 12]. Available from: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9780470147658.chpsy0114/abstract "

    and / or

    "Retrieved from http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9780470147658.chpsy0114/abstract"

--I thought about going into each record and changing it, but that is a lot of work, I guess I might just have to do that. I got the reference from Zotero online but it is not only an online resource so I prefer it not to appear that way. What do you mean by changing the citation style? Changing from APA or vancouver style or can I change the settings within a predefined style?
  • You should just copy the DOI to be Extra field with this format:
    DOI: 10.1002/9780470147658.chpsy0114

Zotero will then include the DOI, rather than the URL, in the bibliography, in accordance with APA style
