Zotero not working with Science Direct

Hi. Here's the URL of the journal article. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1532046408001226

And here's the message: An error occurred while saving this item. See Troubleshooting Translator Issues for more information.

Here's a rundown of troubleshooting:
1. zotero extension is installed
2. science direct had responded as a supported site in the past (did this change?)
3. zotero is open
4. checked for extension updates, found none
5. browser is Safari Version 11.0.3 (13604.5.6)
6. zotero version is 5.0.35.1
7. did not find anything about Science Direct on known translator issues.
8. when i hover over the zotero icon i see 'Save to Zotero (ScienceDirect)'
9. white listed Science Direct although ad blockers indicated no content on the site was being blocked
10. problem is specific to this site. I tested https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11095242 to compare. That one works just fine with Zotero
11. not sure if i should do this step.
12. Your debug output has been submitted.
The Debug ID is D194810301.

Thank you.
  • We've seen some weirdness with ScienceDirect on Safari. Can you try a different browser for testing?
  • Me too!
Safari 11.03 with Zotero Connector 5.0.36, Zotero 5.0.38
I can not download ScienceDirect pdf while using Zotero Connector in Safari.
Showing "An error occurred while saving with Sciencedirect"
No pdf and no author name.
    Thank you~

Here is a ScienceDirect link that gives problems on Safari but not on Firefox or Chrome. It is to an open access paper and automatically downloads the pdf in the browser (even with Zotero closed). Thus, this ScienceDirect page has weirdness independent of Zotero. ScienceDirect forces the pdf file upon viewing the abstract for all articles from this journal. I point this out because the pdf files aren't imported into Zotero with the metadata (edit -- even when I use Firefox) and maybe this could be helpful with issue tracking.

  • I am having the same problems with ScienceDirect while using Chrome (including the open access file above). This occurs both on my stationary computer as well as on my laptop.
  • The translator has been updated various times since and we're not aware of any current problems, so please run through https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues as they apply and provide all required information in the final step if the other ones don't help
