Inserting new citations in a Word Document

I have tried for hours to add new citations (AMA style) to my Word document on my Mac. It works for a while but when I go back to add a new citation each attempt gives me a 1 (underlined in superscript) instead of the next number in the series. I have closed Zotero, closed my computer, started everything a second time. Same thing happens. I am new to Zotero so not sure what I am doing wrong. Thanks.

You're just seeing disabled automatic citation updates as per https://www.zotero.org/blog/zotero-5-0-36/
(don't spend hours on any Zotero issue before asking for help, btw.)

OK but not sure what I am supposed to do? Can you instruct me about what to do? Disable updates? Or just be patient that the numbering will correct itself eventually?Sorry to be such a dummy about this but I am frustrated.

In Word, click Document Preferences in the Zotero tab and check the "Update citations automatically" box.
