"There was an error starting Zotero" - after a failed citation download and crash

Hello,

I love Zotero and have been using it for about a year now with no problems. But now I have one - please can you help?

Profile as follows:
Windows Vista 32bit
Firefox 3.0.10
Zotero - I can't tell you exactly which version, because I can't open it. But it's definitely not 1.5, and I think it's 1.0.10

Issue:
I was trying to download a citation from the Cambridge Press Journals (something like that), and it didn't work. I guess I did something wrong or the site wasn't compatible, as it ended up with the process not stopping, and Zotero said that an error had happened, and to restart Firefox.

I closed it down, and when it reopened all the tabs in Firefox were lost. Also, there's that yellow triangle on the Zotero thing (bottom right), and if I try to open it it says "there was an error starting Zotero".

I looked in the Firefox error log but I'm not sure what's relevant, so here are the first ten or so:
=========================

  • With Firefox closed, try removing the files xpti.dat and compreg.dat from your Firefox profile. They'll be regenerated when you restart Firefox. If you still get an error with Zotero at that point, let us know what's in the error console.
  • Hello and thanks for getting back to me :)

    Actually, I found another solution. When starting my other browser (Opera), the same dialog box came up. Basically, the citation file I had downloaded was somehow restarting/relinking to the browsers when they started up. So I deleted that file from my downloads folder (had to shut it down in the Task Manager first) and all is well.

    If I may make a suggestion: perhaps including something about the "There was an error starting Zotero" message in the FAQ, or Troubleshooting tips, would be useful? It's a scary one as there is no extra information, and all one sees is a empty Zotero library and no way to get into Zotero. When I searched the forum, there were some mentions but nothing relevant to me.

    Please keep up the great work on Zotero! I am zealously promoting it to all and sundry, and our library has spoken of making sure their catalogue system is compatible with it.
