Edit required: York St John University - Harvard

I wondered whether it would be possible for someone to make a very small edit to the 'York St John University - Harvard' style? The in text citation should be (author date) e.g (Smith 2000) and not (author, date). I think this error has arisen because of a mistake in one of our previous style guides where a comma was included. Our current style guide can be found here: https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/ils/harvardpdf

  • Apologies for reposting but I think that this still needs correcting. When I view the post it says that there is one comment but when I go into the thread there doesn't appear to be one. If the request has been made in the wrong way then please let me konw. There are a couple of other small corrections that are required to this style so I want to make sure that I'm following the correct process. Many thanks.

    I'm on my phone, but I had a look at the .CSL file and it looks correct.

    What else is not correct?
  • Apologies - I must have been looking at an old source. I will repost with the other corrections once I've checked that I haven't missed anything. Many thanks.
  • There are just two edits that I would really appreciate being made (if possible):

    1) Books, book chapters & journal articles: our current style guidance is that ebooks, ebook chapters and online journal articles are referenced in the same way as print so:

    Kielhofner, G. (2004) Conceptual foundations of occupational therapy. 3rd ed. Philadelphia, PA, F.A. Davis Co.

    instead of:

    Kielhofner, G. (2004) Conceptual foundations of occupational therapy. 3rd ed. [Internet] Philadelphia, PA, F.A. Davis Co. Available from https://capitadiscovery.co.uk/yorksj/items/69174 [Accessed 30th May 2018].

    It would be great if the style could be changed to reflect this.

    2) Where [Internet] is present in the style we would like the full stop to occur after instead of before so:

    Edelson, S. (n.d.) Asperger’s Syndrome [Internet]. Available from http:// www.autism.org/asperger.html [Accessed 19th September 2002].

    instead of:

    Edelson, S. (n.d.) Asperger’s Syndrome. [Internet] Available from http:// www.autism.org/asperger.html [Accessed 19th September 2002].

    Many thanks.

  • Hi,

    Right click and save as, install in Zotero: https://github.com/POBrien333/styles/raw/86613fcc5ca6305065c4bb87afa68278fa80ae4b/harvard-york-st-john-university.csl

    Can you check if this is all now working? Made a bunch of changes.
  • Hi,

    The style is now correct in relation to point 2) - thanks!

    It looks like 1) is still an issue i.e. the presence of a URL in a book record results in the reference including [Internet], the URL and an accessed date when we'd like it to appear in the same way as a print book.

    Thanks for taking the time to look at this.

    Ruth
  • 1)
    I'm following the guidelines, p. 20:
    Armstrong, M. (2016) Armstrong’s handbook of strategic human resource management [Internet]. 6th ed. London, Kogan Page. Available from http://capitadiscovery.co.uk/yorksj/items/454831 [Accessed 23rd June 2016].
  • Apologies - we are just in the process of updating the guidance on ebooks. I will repost when the updated guidance is available.

    Many thanks,

    Ruth
  • Great.
    I have marked the Pull Request to be on hold and will wait for further guidelines.
  • Hi,

    Our official guidance for ebooks (https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/ils/harvardpdf, p. 20) has now been updated so would it be possible to alter the style so that ebook and ebook chapters are referenced in the same way as print books and chapters?

    Also, would it be possible for the 'Document' format to be updated so that it follows the report/document guidance on p. 62 & 63 of the guide?

    Many thanks,

    Ruth

    Thanks @r.patterson

    @adamsmith
    1. eBooks: How can we differentiate here? An ebook is not just an ebook if it has the URL field filled in.

    2. Document (article in CSL):
    As this type does not have a "place" field, you'll need to add it in the extra field via publisher-place: Washington, D.C.

    Please test this, reports/documents should be correct now: https://github.com/POBrien333/styles/raw/8f8c725ed78c02aa5d8cb6003343fd3a5a69d6df/harvard-york-st-john-university.csl
  • 1. Per the above, just removing any URL/online statements for books shoudl work, no?
    2. Couldn't we use "report" instead -- "Document" isn't an item type that's available from CSL, so it's a mess to code with (only appears as a fallback on else conditions).
  • 1. Actually style is doing that already.
    2. https://aurimasv.github.io/z2csl/typeMap.xml#map-document I used article and that seems to work fine.
  • Many thanks - I will test.

    The reason for these changes is that we have just starting using Talis Aspire for our reading list system. I understand that they pull the style information from Zotero. In Talis Aspire there is a Document format which I assume pulls from the Zotero Document format (otherwise we would just use the 'Report' format). In Talis Aspire a lot of the book references contain URLs to the ebook. They are, therefore, being identified as ebooks and are referenced as such.
  • Re:
    1. I don't think so. You'd have to wrap an if type="book chapter" match="none" around the online access macro and remove book from
    <if type="book webpage post-weblog article report" match="any">
    <choose>
    <if match="any" variable="URL">
    <text term="internet" text-case="capitalize-first" prefix="[" suffix="]"/>
    </if>
    </choose>
    </if>
    </choose>
  • I've tested the following:

    https://github.com/POBrien333/styles/raw/8f8c725ed78c02aa5d8cb6003343fd3a5a69d6df/harvard-york-st-john-university.csl

    1) If a report or documents has a URL is it possible for the reference to format as on page 63 e.g.

    Leatherwood, S. (2002) Whales, dolphins, and porpoises of the western
    North Atlantic [Internet]. Report no. 63. Washington D.C., U.S. Dept. of
    Commerce. Available from http://www.gutenberg.org/files/33527/33527-h.
    htm [Accessed 31st December 2012].

    2) Did the format for ebook get changed - I wasn't sure from the question that was asked above? We would like the format for ebooks to be the same as books i.e. the presence of a URL doesn't change how the reference displays (just like online journal articles display in the same way as the print).

    Many thanks,

    Ruth

    Hi @r.patterson

    Please don't flip the numbering of the two issues. Makes it harder to understand when coming back after a few days. ;)

    1. eBooks:
    This is working for me as follows, tested out in the CSL Editor:

    Jones, S. (2013) Literature, modernism, and dance [Internet]. Oxford, Oxford University Press. Available from https://capitadiscovery.co.uk/yorksj/items/ dda-27/EDZ0000155880. [Accessed 1st June 2018].

    BTW: there is a mistake on page 20 with a dot after the (2013) of the Jones example.

    2. Document:
    this formats like this for me with the place in extra as described above:

    Leatherwood, S. (2002) Whales, dolphines, and porpoises of the western North Atlantic [Internet]. Washington D.C., U.S. Dept. of Herbert. Available from http://www.gutenberg.org/files/33527/33527-h. htm. [Accessed 31st December 2012].

    Are you sure you're using the latest style from here? https://github.com/POBrien333/styles/raw/f728e8d4325f0b7a277c27b73964e367eed83d39/harvard-york-st-john-university.csl

  • I think you're misunderstanding what they're requesting for ebooks (1.):
    The idea is to treat ebooks (or books with a URL) exactly like print books, i.e. no access date, no URL.
  • Thanks adamsmith - that is correct.
  • So just to understand this then. You've just released new guidelines, but want me to make the style contrary to those guidelines?
  • First sentence on p.20 of the guidelines reads:

    If the ebook is just an electronic version of the print you can reference it as you
    would a print book (see page 18).

    That's what we would like the style to reflect.

    Thanks,

    Ruth
  • Many thanks. This looks correct. Is it possible to replace the style on the repository with this?

    Apologies for all the toing and froing.

    Ruth

  • The way this works is that I have put in a so-called "Pull Request" on the code repository on GitHub and you can see that here: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/pull/3532

    As you can see it is currently on "open". this will need reviewing by the team and will then be "merged", which means it will then be on the Zotero repository and also updated within the program when that updates.
  • @r.patterson
    The style is now merged and will update in your Zotero with the next update or you can do it manually in the preferences.
  • Please could I get the name of this style changed? From September 2019 we will be asking new students to use Cite Them Right Harvard. We would, therefore, like to change the name of this style to York St John University - Harvard (pre September 2019 entry)? We are in the process of changing the guide. Do I need to wait until this is published before the name can be changed?

    Thanks, Ruth
  • Do you want to keep the old style?
    We can just make this current style into a dependent style that uses Cite Them Right.
  • We need to keep the old style at the moment as returning students will still be using it. Thanks,
  • The new guide has now been published to reflect the requested change to style name: www.yorksj.ac.uk/ile/harvardpdf

    Thanks.
  • Great, @r.patterson.
    To confirm, your style guide outlines exactly our Cite Them Right style?
    https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=id:harvard-cite-them-right

    Then I'll make a pull request to make the style just a depending style.
