File sharing in open groups

Hi all,

It's not currently possible to share files in open groups. Could you give me some background as to why that is? If we wanted to make publications (e.g. OA publications) available in an open group, what is the best way to go about this?

Many thanks!
  • I believe that it is a combination of two factors--(1) wanting to avoid the potential of major copyright term violations and corresponding conflicts with publishers, and (2) wanting to prevent an unduly large burden on Zotero's servers from uses of it as a large-scale file distribution service.

For open access publications, it would be easiest to distribute the articles by including the link to the open access version of the article, either in the URL field or by attaching the URL to the item. Both will show up in open groups.
  • Thanks!

We may re-host some OA articles to have a collection on our server - I guess it's not possible to attach 2 URLs, e.g. the primary URL and a backup URL or similar?

Also, would it be feasible to have a "mixed group type", e.g. where admins can see attachments, but others can't? Then we could potentially have a systematic mirroring process, by which we can simply mirror our library attachments to another server.

  • You can attach multiple links to an item. It would be a good idea to name them descriptively based on where they are hosted (primary versus backup). See my My Publications page for a similar setup with articles hosted on my personal web page: http://zotero.org/bwiernik

More fine-grained user settings for groups have been discussed, but I'm not sure what current plans are.

  • Very interesting. We're straying off topic here, but ...

    (1) how do you get the publication feed on your Zotero profile here http://zotero.org/bwiernik ?

    (2) For your website, e.g. https://wiernik.org/reprints or /downloads, do you use the Zotero API?
  • (1) https://www.zotero.org/support/my_publications

    (2) That is a WordPress site I maintain myself. It isn’t connected to the Zotero API.
  • Thats great, thank you!
  • I've tried this here https://www.zotero.org/bjohas - but it only displays a subset of papers (perhaps the most recent ones)?
  • You can see my personal page https://ansorge.website there I use Zotero API for list of my Publication. In this example, you cannot share the files - URLs are not hyperlinks. But you can also use curriculum vitae section of your Zotero profile, where the hyperlinks are active (see my profile https://www.zotero.org/libora/cv)

My Publications will show all of the items you drag to My Publications and complete the dialog for. Is that not the case?
  • In the CV you can select specific subcollections (one or more) to the showing. You can also select different citation style.
  • (Do note that the My Publications and CV features are different. The My Publications feature displays on your profile page, whereas the CV feature requires visitors to click on the "Curriculum Vitae" link. My Publications also offers you the opportunity to share attachment files [that you have the rights to distribute publicly] whereas CV does not.)
  • Hi both,

The "My Pubs" feature doesn't show all the entries in my publications list. For example, I have several conference papers in the "My Pubs" section in Zotero desktop, but only one on my profile. https://www.zotero.org/bjohas

(I've re-sync'd Zotero, and then reloaded the page.)

What could be the issue here?

(I've not explored the CV section yet, but will do this too.)
  • @LiborA - thanks for sharing your site. It's the list of publications on your front pages, that's produced with the API, right?
  • The "My Pubs" feature doesn't show all the entries in my publications list.
Do the items show in your main online library? If so, what's an example URL?
  • The online library doesn't have a "My Pubs" section - correct?

E.g. this conference paper https://www.zotero.org/bjohas/items/collectionKey/27777CAH/itemKey/J8RPM3PC is in my online library, and in Zotero desktop, it's in the "My Pubs" collection, but it doesn't appear on https://www.zotero.org/bjohas

    Correct — just the profile.

If you make a change to the item locally (any change — and you can change it right back) and sync, does it appear in your publications list?
  • Yes - it does, so that offers work-around.

There are also some items appearing that I deleted from "My Pub". How do I get those to be recognised?
