References no longer linked in word

Hello,
I'm using the latest version of Zotero and Mac for Word 16.8.
When I add a citation into a word document like normal, it is no longer linked to the original database so will not make changes when I update in my library.
When I add in bibliography, it is similarly not linked, and is not formatted correctly with indentations.
Any advice? I've uninstalled and reinstalled Zotero to no avail.
Any help much appreciated!

    The 16.x versions of Word for Mac (which are “Insider” beta versions) have numerous issues with Add-ons (including Zotero). You should downgrade to the current stable Word version (15.41).

    First, open the Check for Updates window in Word and de-select the “Insider” updates option. Then, uninstall Word, download the Office installer from Microsoft again, and re-install Word.
