Merging two imported libraries

My Library seems to have two different libraries that were imported years ago (2008) at the same time. For some reason they are not identical (contain many of the same cites, but not all). As a result My Library contains many, many duplicate citations. How can I reconcile them? The sync button doesn't seem to do anything for this issue.

    Click on the Duplicate Items collection in the left pane (if it’s not visible, right-click on My Library and choose show duplicates), Then sort by Title, review each pair of items to consolidate the best version of each field, and click Merge Items.
