Does zotero use a Mozilla Add-on/plugin system?

What is the relationship between zotero and some sort of Mozilla Add-on/plugin system?

The visual display and filetypes used by the zotero plugin/Add-on system suggests that it uses some sort of infrastructure developed by Mozilla. Is this true? If so, what are the details?

Thanks.
  • Zotero was originally developed as a Firefox extension, and it is still built using Mozilla technologies. Plugins for Zotero are built using the Mozilla Add-on/plugin system. Zotero extensions need to list Zotero (and ideally also the related program Juris-M) in the targetApplication list in the extension's install.rdf file. See here for an example.

See here for additional information on Zotero plugin development.

The Zotero plugins page also has links to many plugins' source that you can look at for development examples.
