Force Font Face in Short Title Field?

Is it possible to force the font face to vary within the "short title" field for discrete works? For example, for a particular book I want the short title to spit out LST 1851, where either (1) LST is italicized and 1851 is not, or (2) neither are italicized.

This is hilarious! (Remember, this is for item type: book.) I get the effect that I want with this syntax: LST [i]1851[/i] (where [ ] = < >). It yields: LST 1851. Turning italic on in a field in which it is already turned on turns it off.
