Both Zotero 5.0.23 and MS Word for Mac 15.39 crash repeatedly when trying to change style

I have a PhD thesis that's more than 100,000 words spanning over 250 or so pages. My examiners want me to change reference style. I have managed to change from Chicago (author-date) to Development and Change in settings - but the document has not updated. I cannot edit a citation or add a bibliography. For every attempt, both applications crash. Help to resolve this would be very much appreciated.

You're probably better off working with the document before the initial change of the citation style and following the debugging instructions.
