Ctrl+Z undo bad behavior in MS Word with Zotero

When trying to undo (ctrl+z) regular plain text in MS word, the undo leaps back in time and I lose many sentences. This file runs Zotero and the error seems to be related.

Using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 with Zotero 5.0.22 with word plugin. (I also use the Chrome plugin, but I don't think that is involved here.)

Sometimes I'll be working on my .docx document and then I'll need to ctrl+z undo some text changes. Suddenly I'm whipped back in time to many changes prior with entire sentences missing, etc. Ctrl+Y redo, does not bring the lost text back. In fact, Ctrl+z and ctrl+y are changing sentences I don't have recent memory of changing. If I play around with the file and keep hitting ctrl+z, sometimes it ends up altering an in-text citation tag to a giant mess of code which may or may not include entry fields like the abstract of a paper. I delete these tags, but sometimes word just crashes and says it needs to repair the file before reopening. When it reopens, the lost text is still lost.

Sometimes in-text citations will suddenly change from proper formatting to long strings of code that do or do not include entry fields like the entire abstract! I don't know if this is a related symptom.

Partial Workaround: Fortunately, I have word auto-saving so after the ctrl+z error, I found where the last auto-saved file was stored and got my sentences back if the auto-save does not occur after the problem does (I have to be lucky).

Any advice is welcomed. Thanks!

  • The code is this: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/word_field_codes

I'm not aware of anyone else with undo issues with Zotero in Word and I'm not sure I understand why you think they're related to Zotero
  • Re: code. When the code error happens, it's only for one single citation, not all of them. I did not know about alt+F9, but when I press it, it toggles between in-text formatting and code for all citations, regardless if only one is highlighted.

  • I have exactly the same problem. I can't explain it any better, but it's a real problem. I think it's linked to the execution of the WBA macro. Some CTRL+Z (not all) make me go back to the last modification of a quote.
