Please include direction to upgrade Word toolbar with Beta installation.

I installed the Beta and got the yellow triangle saying my database was an earlier version. So I reinstalled the earlier version - did not correct the problem. Whatever was written into my registry did not "speak" to each other until I reinstalled Beta and installed 1.04b ver of the Word add-on.

It might be a good idea to put a disclaimer next to the Beta download that they will need to download the newest add-on at the same time.

10 minutes is too much time to lose when the paper is due tommorow. :-)
  • Yes, well THAT is the page I eventually found on my own.

Clicking the icon on the home page immediately downloads the plug-in.
Being that there are specific compatibility ramifications to installing the beta -
If it were my company I would make that icon point to
    http://www.zotero.org/support/1.5_beta#word_processor_plugins and rewrite
that page as necessary to fully inform the user.

We do shoot for user friendly do we not?

While I am at it, Zotero has the potential to become the industry leader in citation and bibliography. Do not overlook what you think are simplistic issues. It is the accumulation of ignored small problems that eventually creates a company culture of inward focus and entitlement. Recommended reading on this subject is "Managing the Unexpected" by Weick and Sutcliffe

Maybe it's a good thing then that Zotero isn't produced by a company?

On a more serious note, maybe it would be helpful to have an additional link, around "Which version should I use?" and "Having trouble installing?", called "How do I upgrade", detailing issues on the (irreversibly) upgrading of the user's database and on the updating of the word processor plugins. I agree with you that you do have to look for the information a bit now, although it is available as noksagt indicated.
  • I'm with Jan on this one and think Rintze has the right idea.
I had a similar issue, took me very little time to solve, but I agree that it would be nice to avoid these little things and more clearly link each Zotero version to its respective plugin.
  • Does the link to http://www.zotero.org/support/which_version not get the idea across? I'm not sure it's a good idea to slap some blinking red warning link on the main page telling people the perils of upgrading, as that will scare people off needlessly. Is "Which version should I use?" not clear enough? We could rephrase it. I can't see why it's necessary to create more documentation pages for people to read before upgrading. I think that page sums up the issues at hand. Any suggestions on how it might better be presented on the main page?

I added links to the documentation/download pages for the word processor plugins to which_version. That should help a little.
  • I've taken the liberty of modifying some of the wiki pages (I hope you consider my changes as an improvement), adding, among others, a bit more focus on how to upgrade:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/1.5_beta
    http://www.zotero.org/support/installation
    http://www.zotero.org/support/which_version

A small comment for the front page: could "Having trouble installing?" be changed to "Installation instructions"?
