Proquest Ebook Central

When looking at the detail page of a book in Proquest Ebook Central, the Zotero Chrome plugin does not recognize that it is a book. Instead, it saves a "detail page."

I found a workaround, which is to hit the "export citation" button for endnote/citavi. You will be given the prompt:

ZOTERO CONNECTOR

Import items from ebookcentral.proquest.com into Zotero?

but you need to hit "cancel" or else the plugin just freezes (I kept getting javascript errors). The .ris file will then download and when you open it, the desktop application will properly import the book.

Obviously, there are a few issues here:
1. The Zotero chrome plugin should just be able to recognize the book and import it
2. The Zotero Connector should work in cases where the plugin doesn't

Any other ideas? Otherwise, I just thought I would share this workaround for anyone else having trouble.

For reference, I am using MAC OS Sierra, Chrome, and Zotero 5.0.21
  • Can you submit a Debug ID for an attempt to import the RIS file using the popup prompt? That should obviously work.
  • A link/permalink to one such ebook page would also be great
  • Hi bwiernik - the Debug ID is D1600936114

You should note that the first time I start up chrome, I can successfully use the Chrome connector. Every time after that throws a problem, however.

adamsmith - for some reason it seems a bit difficult to find a permalink for any book. You can try this one, or try searching by the DocID at the end of the link:

The RIS import failure is a bug that will be fixed in 5.0.22 (and is fixed in the latest 5.0 Beta) — if you select a collection in Zotero instead of the library root, it will work.
  • Slightly OT:

I was unable to import a record for this Proquest Central Ebook at all:
https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/cornell/reader.action?docID=293922 I made a Zotero entry from the Amazon page and edited to look like the ProQuest Central ebook, but I'm not sure which field to put the phrase "Proquest EBook Central" in. In the sample citations, this phrase appears last, but if I insert it as "Edition" or "Series" it appears before the name of the publisher in Chicago.

I have to apologize if this comment is out of place. I've been having a lot of problems with Zotero but I don't have time to study it in the depth that it seems to require - I just do workarounds and make do. I'm not complaining, either! I love Zotero. I've just had frequent trouble saving things from Firefox, especially since the standalone change. I leave this observation here because it seems to be a live issue with this (series? imprint? server? I don't know what to call this.)
  • There simply isn't a good place for this information that'll work decently well with Chicago style. It should go into the LibraryCatalog field, but Chicago won't include that in citations under any circumstances at this time.
  • Ah, thanks for that - knowing the field helps, as I sometimes use MLA.
