Unwanted Reset of Citation Style to Default Version

Hello,

I am working on my PhD-Thesis with Zotero and most things are working out quite well, except for two issues: First one is, adding citations in larger documents (i got approx. 2000 footnotes in total) is painfully slow. I found this is a common issue so i just used several documents which are merged together in a master document. That works for me. But i didn't find anyone with the same, second issue: I changed a Citation Style and installed it via Zotero Settings. But Zotero keeps on resetting the style to the default version. I don't even know from which location Zotero could get the default style, as I reinstalled Zotero (Standalone & Plugin), checked the installation folders and only installed my edited citation style. Still, Zotero resets the style after some time. Sometimes after a restart of my computer, sometimes just on random occasions while Zotero is running.

Any thoughts on that? Thanks in advance,
Adrian
  • You need to change the style <title> and <id> at the top of the style to prevent future updates to the original style from overwriting your changes.
  • Thank you very much, that does look promising, as the id-field still pointed to the URL of the Default Style.

Exactly. The id Field is how Zotero recognizes styles and checks for updates. The title field makes it easier for you to pick out your modified style from the list in Zotero.

It seems to work, great! There's just one more tiny issue: As i don't want to upload my edited citation style somewhere, i can't insert an URL into the id-field. Just leaving the field blank returns an error, whereas entering a "#" leads to a warning message, saying it's not a valid Zotero-Style. But i still can select and use the style properly, so it's no big deal. Is there anything one can enter for styles that are only available locally?

The URL you give in the style id doesn’t have to work. I would recommend leaving the original ID and just add a suffix of some to the end. For example: “https://zotero.org/styles/apa-bwiernik
  • alright, perfect. thank you very much for your help!
