Zotero 5.0 not saving full text pdfs or dowloading metadata from ProQuest's PsychInfo
Hi there,
I just updated to Zotero 5.0 and have been experiencing the following 2 issues:
1. Metadata is not downloading correctly into Zotero ( Zotero in ProQuest is not recognizing the record type correctly, such as articles, it is only recognizing them as webpages and downloading scarce information, icluding article title and date/time added.
2. The full text pdf is not downloading into Zotero when there is one available to download into the program.
I know this similar topic has come up about Zotero not working properly with ProQuest databases since the recent update to 5.0. I also read that the "fix" was to click the Zotero icon, (the little blue document in the upper right corner, next to the search bar in Chrome) when the "Abstract/Details" tab was displayed in ProQuest. I did this, but it didn't work. I tried several other things to see if I could get around this, too:
1. I tried clicking the Zotero icon on the "Full text - PDF" tab in ProQuest
2. I tried opening the full text pdf in another tab and while the Zotero icon appeared as a pdf icon in place of the blue document icon, clicking on it brought up the following message:
"An error occurred while saving this item. Try again, and if the issue persists see Getting Help for more information." A link was embedded in "Getting Help," but this page was unhelpful to my issue.
3. I tried right clicking on the Zotero icon for my options for saving and received the following only:
-Save to Zotero (Embedded Metadata)
-Save to Zotero (Webpage with Snapshot)
-Save to Zotero (Webpage without Snapshot)
At times, the option to save embedded metadata wasn't an option in the list at all.
4. I tried installing the connector on Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, but the same problem occurred in each browser when using ProQuest
5. I tried erasing 5.0 and downgrading to 4.0, but Zotero didn't allow this action since a new version had previously been installed so I couldn't "go back" versions
6. I tried deleting the connector and reinstalling it, but there was no change in Zotero's functionality with ProQuest
7. I tried updating Chrome, Firefox, and Safari to their latest versions
8. I tried going into Zotero's Preferences>General to make sure "Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items" was checked off. It was.
I feel like I've exhausted all options that I could think of and need help. I teach Zotero to graduate school students, who have used it successfully for several years now. The program is a hit here. It has been a helpful central place for them to collect, store and organize their extensive collections of research resources, which is why the school continues to promote it year after year.
Our students use PsychInfo in ProQuest primarily so while it doesn't work with ProQuest databases right now, sets them back in an unfortunate way.
Where would I find the permalink on the ProQuest page? I know this was mentioned on other related threads. I see the following links on one of the ProQuest pages I've tried using Zotero with:
DOI: http://proxy.wi.edu:2100/10.1186/s10194-017-0742-1
Document URL: http://proxy.wi.edu/login?url=https://proxy.wi.edu:2253/docview/1879494546?accountid=25365
Is it ProQuest or Zotero ?
Can someone please advise me?
Much appreciated!

This is an old discussion that has not been active in a long time. Before commenting here, you should strongly consider starting a new discussion instead. If you think the content of this discussion is still relevant, you can link to it from your new discussion.
https://search.proquest.com/docview/1879494546 (as you would see it on campus)
as well as in the more common proxies form
https://search-proquest-com.[libraryproxy]/docview/1879494546
this works fine.
@adomasven are the connectors able to handle the types of proxies referenced above? Seems tricky
@jdiaz85, some questions:
1) Do you see any proxy settings currently in the Proxies pane of the Zotero Connector? If so, what are they?
2) If not, and you go to your library site and click a proxied link and log in through the proxy, does Zotero not prompt you to add a proxy? (If you're already logged in, you'll need to restart your browser, or maybe clear your cookies for proxy.wi.edu.)
3) Do you get sent to proxy.wi.edu:2100 every time you log in to the proxy for ProQuest?
4) If you go to another proxied site, does it use a different (but consistent) port number (i.e., not 2100)?
If you're always seeing a distinct, consistent port number for each site, we should be able to fix this, and you can probably get it to work in the meantime by creating a proxy for http://proxy.wi.edu:2100/%p with a hostname entry for search.proquest.com. That will cause Zotero to consider "proxy.wi.edu:2100" to be "search.proquest.com" when it checks the URL in translators. You could do the same for other site, based on their port numbers.
(Obviously, this isn't something users should have to do, so if this isn't auto-detecting the proxy for you, we'll have to look into why that's not happening, though it may be tricky given that we can't test this ourselves. But to clarify, Zotero should detect the info returned by EZProxy when you go through the login page and create a proxy from that info.)
Thank you so much for your quick turnaround on trying to solve my problem. The fact that you both brought up the school's proxy seemed to have solved this issue in and of itself. The school is currently dealing with some issues with its proxy which our IT team's been working on for a few months now.
The message I sent was in regards to the issue with Zotero that occurred when I was not on campus and using the proxy to access the school's subscription databases. The school's proxy in its current faulty state allows users to access content (which is important), but it doesn't seem to allow Zotero to function as it had with ProQuest before. Even though ProQuest appeared to work well with an older version of Zotero while using our bad proxy, this communication appeared to break with the recent update I did.
I understand that this is no error on Zotero or even ProQuest, if anything, it seems to be a defense mechanism programed into both systems to reject questionable proxy certificates. So kudos to both systems.
When I'm on campus, the updated version of Zotero works perfectly with ProQuest and other databases I was having issues with before and, for the time being, that is all that matters to me since I will be teaching Zotero at the school and not needing to use it remotely right now.
We will get our proxy functioning to its fullest capacity soon (hopefully), but until then, at least, I know how to use Zotero with ProQuest and work around this inconvenience.
Thanks again for your help in bringing the proxy culprit to light.
