Selection of (sub)collections does not work

Zotero normally operates correctly, but at seemingly random moments, when I select a collection or subcollection, the center pane goes blank. An eternal spinning wheel appears next to the search box, and the center pane for all collections afterwards selected is empty. The right pane still shows the number of items in the collection.
