Hi

I have found that CSL seems to "know" about language substitutions by default. For example if one removes
default-locale="en-GB"
from the line below taken from a CSL style file, the drop-down menu for language support is activated in the "Zotero - Document - Preferences" window.



This allows language-specific substitutions, but it does not work perfectly for Swedish. For example in English(US), a change from "p." to "pp." is automatic depending on the number of pages. Alas, not in Swedish where one gets "s." for both single and page ranges (would like "ss."). Also, sometimes one would like to use "et al." and not the Swedish "m.fl.".

Can someone explain how this works?
How can one address/override this?

the Swedish locales are defined in https://github.com/citation-style-language/locales/blob/master/locales-sv-SE.xml. I see there "s." as the abbreviation for pages.

A number of Swedish universities use the "ss." as plural. Some also promote et al. instead of m.fl..

Can I/should I override some abbreviations as specified in the locale by including them in the style? If so, can you give an example how?

Rather than just sending you a link to a rather large spec sheet, here is an example.
This needs to be placed straight after the "info" section at the very beginning. In this example it will render et al. to et al. despite the fact that it would normally render it to m.fl. in swedish.

Styles can override any translations provided by the CSL locale files by including a "locale" section in the CSL style. See http://docs.citationstyles.org/en/stable/specification.html#locale and https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/blob/master/apa.csl for examples. You can find the Swedish locale file at https://github.com/citation-style-language/locales/blob/master/locales-sv-SE.xml.

For your particular example of using "ss.", you can also force the style to always use the plural form of the page term, e.g. with <label variable="page" plural="true"/>. See http://docs.citationstyles.org/en/stable/specification.html#label.
