ISBN Entry Issues

edited September 9, 2017
Adding multiple ISBNs seems to have problems of hanging and entering multiple ISBNs into one item. Here is a list of 20 ISBNs from our libib library that causes issues. It is not just the number, we have seen issues with lists of 5 or 10.

Currently, Isbn import stalls when an isbn is not found. Looking into it (9788984340244 is in no catalog we search)
  • @danstillman this is a Z5 regression -- import continues after not matching an ISBN in Zotero 4. Before I go on a hunt, do you happen to have a good idea where this fails?
  • If you remove that ISBN (which does match in http://isbndb.com/), you get a number of items where multiple ISBNs are in the ISBN field. This must be another kind of bug.
  • @adamsmith Could this be same issue as I described here https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/284732/#Comment_284732 ? I.e. the the MARC translator finishes without any issue, but somehow the calling LoC translator is not aware of this.
  • @walker Are you sure those are not the ISBNs for the various versions of the item (electronic, hardback, paperback)?
  • No, they are all different books. This is from a libib.com library of over 1600 books.
  • No, the multiple isbn for one item are indeed for different versions of that book. But it's not clear to me that that's the right behavior here. It would be easy to just use the searched isbn
  • I personally would much prefer all the isbns for a book to be included. That makes it easier to use the isbn data later for lookups, etc.
  • On further investigation, when I input the 19 ISBNs from the above list, omitting the one that can't be found, the 19 now all input correctly, with no multiple ISBNs in the ISBN field. I ran a Zotero report and all refer to different books, no different book versions. I don't know what changed from before when I saw multiple ISBNs in the field. When the all 20 ISBNs are entered, they enter correctly until the one that can't be found is hit and then the input hangs. So, if the bug regarding the unmatched ISBN can be fixed, all should be good.

This should be fixed in the latest 5.0 Beta, and the fix will be included in 5.0.18. (It'd be nice to somehow show that some identifiers failed, but this restores the 4.0 behavior.)
