A Solution for volume and page problem for encyclopedia entries

edited October 5, 2017
Hi,
Many note styles of Zotero, including Chicago Manual of Style, do not add volume number of the encyclopedias to the bibliography.
In the answers that this forum provides, it is advised that the encyclopedia should be changed to the book chapter. This solution works fine.

However, I figured out that Apa adds volume number of the encyclopedias to the bibliography. I have examined the codes of these two styles, and I have determined what is difference between Chicago Manual of Style and Apa.

If "the document type is: entry-encyclopedia" is added to "Else-if book or graphic", the problem seems solved.

Here is the solution:

  • I’m not sure why Chicago doesn’t print the volume number? Seems like that would be relevant? @adamsmith

I have just noticed that Chicago does not print page numbers of Encyclopedia (and Dictionary) Entries as well while APA prints.

So, I edited Chicago Manual of Style in a way that it prints volume number and page numbers of Encyclopedia and Dictionary Entries.

Here is the changes I have made in addition to that of my first message:

And here is the edited version:

In order not to cause a disturbance, I simply add "edited_byErdemli" to the title.
If you would like to use it, please feel free to cast off this addition.
  • The reason the volume number isn't included in the CMoS style is that the Chicago Manual actually has citation formats for "regular" encyclopedias and for academic ones. Regular encyclopedias are covered in (referring to the new 17th edition ) 14.232 and don't include the volume number:
    1. Encyclopaedia Britannica, 15th ed. (1980), s.v. “salvation.”

More academic encyclopedias are treated differently and exactly like book chapters (no volume number in the examples, but clear from context that it would be appropriate to include):

Isaacson, Melissa. “Bulls.” In Encyclopedia of Chicago, edited by Janice L. Reiff, Ann Durkin Keating, and James R. Grossman. Chicago Historical Society, 2005. http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/184.html.

The former should be entered as encyclopedia in Zotero, the latter as a book chapter. Hope that makes sense.
