Can't start Zotero 5

I have been using the Zotero standalone application for some years now, using ubuntu. Yesterday, I installed Zotero 5 following the online instructions. Since I had Zotero open, I was prompted to restart the application. That worked. Slightly different look and feel, but all good. Today, I want to start Zotero but cannot find the zotero icon in the usual directory. It contains lots of files with yesterday's date incl. executables such as 'zotero-bin', 'updater'. None of these launch the application. What am I doing wrong? And where is my database? (slight onset of panic...)
  • Your database should be in ~/Zotero.

You need to run a binary named 'zotero' wherever you put the program files. Generally, though, on Linux you should set up the desktop file and run from the launcher just like other applications.
  • Thanks you, adomasven, for your suggestions. The folder I described earlier is ~/Zotero_linux-x86_64 and no longer contains the 'zotero' binary from which I used to start the program. I have now located what I believe is the database ('zotero.sqlite') inside a subdirectory (several levels down) of '~/.zotero'. Can I download the binary file 'zotero' separately or should I just start afresh and de/reinstall the program?

You can just delete that old Zotero_linux-x86_64 directory and download the tarball again from the download page.
