Can't grab bibliographic information

My browser is safari. I updated the latest version of Zotero 5.0 and the Safari connector also the latest too. But when I try to grab bibliographic information ( papers on Google Scholar and CiNii, it seems every website is the same situation, but I didn’t test every site ) and add new items, the connector doesn’t work. It could only generate the webpage snapshot on Goolge Scholar, it makes me very upset. Does anyone face the same situation.
PS. I’m a Chinese user. The sync speed is very slow, It seems that the “GFW” is take notice of Zotero. But if I use shadowsocks and proxys like that , I even can’t connect to the server. It’s also a big problem for me.
Appreciate for anything you can help.
  • Try updating translators in Zotero 5.0 Preferences -> General and then in Zotero Connector Preferences -> Advanced. That should fix the saving problem.
  • Thank you for your advice. I have tried that, but unfortunately it still dosen't work.
I suppose may be it's because of my network. Since I'm in mainland China, a great firewall forbid me to visit foreign website. I usually use shadowsocks(a client enable me to visit websites through proxies ) to cross the firewall. Because of the firewall, I have trouble visit amazon.com,google scholar .etc. If I didn't use shadowsocks, I can't visit these sites. But if I use it, I can't connect the server and sync on Zotero 5.0.
So maybe the exact problem is how to use proxies in the Zotero 5.0. I have tried to change the proxy settings on in the Config Editor, but the result is still depressing.
  • The fact that you only get a webpage icon for Google Scholar and others indicates that the Zotero Connector is either missing translators or is failing to use them. Failure to use them could be causedby the proxy if it changes URLs, but otherwise should be fine. You should disable all proxies and try updating translators on the client and connector again, then enable the proxy and see if you can import items properly from google scholar. You can generate a Debug ID for an attempt to update translators and we might be able to comment more.

@dstillman might be able to suggest something for the syncing.
  • Thank you, your suggestion is useful . I can't find Zotero Connector Preference, it seems the connector doesn't have any preference. Is it in the Preference->Extension->Zotero Connector ? If so this part have one button uninstall. So I uninstall and install it again. As for the translators on the clients, I disabled proxies and try updating translators on the client for several times. It always report "error", only succeeded once. And the debug log turns out like this, I don't know what does it mean.

    the Debug ID is D1860759786
  • Could you disable proxying, restart Zotero and then try again?
  • Thanks, I have done it again. I quited the proxy client shadowsocks and updated the translator on the client. But the result is still the same The debug ID is D1625824310.It seems that zotero.org is blocked by our government.
I can't visit zotero.org without vps or vpn.

  • It works now. It's because I install the Firefox version , so this version can't update anymore. I uninstalled the Firefox version and do as what you said ,and now it works. Thank you very much. Sorry for trouble you so much.
