Unable to use standalone version in Word 2008

I've gone through all of the troubleshooting steps on the site. The tool bar shows up in Windows, but when I click on any of the buttons to add a citation, refresh, anything, nothing happens. No window pops up, nothing. I have reinstalled multiple times, restarted both programs multiple times, etc. I cannot use the firefox plug in because the firefox browser is blocked on my work computer; I can only use Chrome.

    Are you running the Zotero client on this machine, when pressing the buttons in Word? Word 2008 only exists for MacOS, are you running MacOS or Windows and which version of Word?
