Syncing

When I sync between two computer the one that receives the updates loses ALL local copies. I get the error cannot File Cannot be found, locate. When I goto locate the files does not exists in disk either.

Beware if you have research as the sync does not work. I was trying to sync between a laptop and my desktop both machines are Vista 32 bit.
  • Are you using a WebDAV server?

    no, should I be?
  • OK, in the future, please read the documentation and, if necessary, ask for help rather than posting dire, uninformed warnings in our forums.

  • Good point. So much for me being a good researcher.

I thought you just had to create an account as in the first step and didn't even think about the WebDAV part as I assumed that zotero would just sync it via there servers.

Thank you for the link and help.
  • Hi kjsphoto, you're not the only "dire, uninformed" user out there. I had also incorrectly assumed that the zotero sync would sync attachments.
  • swevrywhere: No need to misrepresent what I said. The assumption is fine and reasonable, though that happens to not be how it currently works. "dire, uninformed" simply referred to the warning ("Beware...") in kjsphoto's original post.
  • Oh, I thought you were referring to kjsphoto. Sorry, my bad.
  • I'm sorry, but I read the documentation, and I don't understand what I am supposed to put in the URL box. The documentation says to "enter the URL provided by the service"--what service?

The WebDAV service. You must host or find your own service for syncing of attachments. Some suggestions are listed at http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/4559/ & in other posts on the forums.

You don't need to use this if you only want to sync your bibliographic metadata (which happens on Zotero's servers).
  • So, if I just want to be able to access my library collections from another computer, are there instructions for just that?

    Yes. On the same page.

Just enable syncing & put your zotero.org user/password into the preferences, per: http://www.zotero.org/support/sync#data_syncing

You had been following the instructions at http://www.zotero.org/support/sync#file_syncing which is only for attachments

Suggestions on how to improve documentation to be less obtuse would be welcome.
  • Sorry, the documentation would have been at least slightly less obtuse if I had realized that the image link had been broken. Now there's a visual, at least. But yes, please, suggestions on the documentation are always welcome.
