Retrieve pdf metadata

First, can I just say that the ability to retrieve metadata for PDFs via GoogleScholar is brilliant and life changing for me. I've just shortened a major project from days and days [and many, many mouse clicks] to probably a day or two. Thank you so much.

Is there any way to check a resource other than GoogleScholar for the metadata? I have a number of pdfs of dissertations that were published at the UW and would like to try to get the metadata from WorldCat rather than GoogleScholar [there isn't a lot of data about dissertations available via GS].

Thanks for any suggestions!
  • At this time, only a text search via google scholar and a DOI search via crossref are performed. There is still room for improvement, of course.

WorldCat, unlike google scholar, lacks a full text index for their content. Dissertations, unlike articles with a DOI, lack a unique identifier in their text that can be queried. I don't know how a "smart" discovery of dissertation metadata would work off-the-top-of-my-head.
  • That's what I thought, but it was worth a try. It also explains a couple of other problems I was having. Thank you!
