Crash occurs when I try to merge two items

Check your database integrity from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences and update to Zotero 5.0, now available, and let us know if you still have trouble.

The database checks out, but I rely on Better BibTex, which has not yet been upgraded to 5.0. I'd rather not upgrade without that, unless it's possible to run 5.0 in parallel with 4.0+BBT somehow? I don't mind maintaining separate databases, and I'd be interested to try 5.0 without BBT to see if I can manage without it (I've been using it so long I forget what that's like).
