Moving Zotero file storage

Hello!

I've been using Zotero for several years now, and think its great. My library has a large number of entries, attaching about 10 GB of pdfs (and some video files). In my current set-up, i sync my metadata to the Zotero Sync Server, and then sync my attachment files using WebDav to 'box.com' account.

In using these syncing services, I really want to make sure that if my harddrive were to die (which it almost did this week), i would still be able to access and then recreate my Zotero library (with all the pdf attachments) on a new harddrive.

I've now hit my 10GB limit on my Box.com account, and so am considering moving my file attachment storage to another service. The Zotero service seems a good bet, but i'm also looking into using Google Drive, as I have already paid for storage there. However, i know that syncing with Drive is a little complicated.

So, first of all, i'd appreciate any thoughts on which of Drive or Zotero is best!

My second question is how i might change the location of my file attachments, without losing any of these files. Is it simply a matter of stopping syncing to my Box.com account, and then choosing a new sync location, and all the files will automatically upload to this new location?

Google Drive does not natively support WebDAV, which Zotero uses for file syncing. So, you would need to install one of several third-party tools to create a WebDAV bridge between Zotero and Google Drive. Personally, I'd find such a setup to be way too much work and fragile to be worth it.

In general, I strongly recommend using Zotero syncing. It is the most reliable (as it doesn't depend on an outside API to be operational to work), it enables additional features (e.g., group file storage, viewing attachments on the Zotero.org website), and it also helps support Zotero development. The maximum cost for Zotero storage is $120/year for unlimited storage, so it is comparably priced to other sync services.

To switch to Zotero file storage, just change the setting in your Zotero Preferences.
  • Thanks for your comment - it does zotero is a good way to go.

How would i go about changing my sync location from Box.com to zotero?
  • You just change the file sync settings in the Zotero preferences in the sync tab. Once you've made sure that the files have synced to Zotero (there should be a progress bar, but if you want to be extra sure also try to open a couple of files from the website view of the library here), you can delete the files from box.com
