Broken Citations/missing library items

I'm returning to a project that I worked on a couple of years ago. It seems that many of my citations (in a word document) are broken. They appear to be zotero citations when I click on them, but when I click on "edit citation," I get an error message that they are not valid citations. In some cases, when I look in my library, the entry is not there. In others, the entry is there, but the link just doesn't seem to be connected. Some links work, so it is not that I somehow disconnected all of them. Any ideas on how to fix that? Or at least prevent it from happening in the future.

I've changed computers and thus acquired updated versions of both word and zotero since using these before. However, if doing such things means having to redo citations, zotero is not a good solution for me, so I'm trying to figure out what the problem is exactly. Is there a way to view the Microsoft fields within the document to just get a better idea of where the citation is supposed to be connecting?
  • What's the exact error message you're getting? I don't think I've ever seen "not valid citations" as an error message from Zotero.

See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/word_field_codes on showing hiding word field codes. If you aren't able to figure this out, paste one here.
  • Thanks. Viewing the field notes clears it up. My fault! The messed up citations are from entries I had moved from Endnote into Zotero a while time ago. Looks like I missed re-linking a few old citations in the document after I transitioned programs and on the new computer, I didn't install Endnote.
