Zotero crashes Firefox when accessing German Wikipedia (Report ID 1547746017)

After the most recent update of the Zotero Firefox add-on, Firefox crashes each time when accessing the German Wikipedia, e.g. https://de.wikipedia.org/.

Loading a Wikipedia page is completely sufficient to provoke the error, no need to access any Zotero functionality. I tracked this down to Zotero by deactivating the Zotero add-on while keeping all other add-ons active. Please see report 1547746017 for any details.

Where can I download the previous add-on version?

First, what do you mean by crash?

There's nothing in the latest update that would cause this — there was one fix related to PDF opening, and otherwise the 4.0 Firefox version hasn't changed since last November.
I tracked this down to Zotero by deactivating the Zotero add-on while keeping all other add-ons active.
That's not really the way to debug this. To debug, disable all your other extensions and enable just Zotero. Does it then happen? And does it stop if you then disable Zotero?

If so, check to see if there are any entries in the Proxies tab of the preferences, and remove any references to Wikipedia.
  • First, when I said "Firefox crashed" I meant that Firefox shows the following error message: "We're sorry. Firefox had a problem and crashed. We’ll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts."

Okay, so I dug a little deeper and found out that this crashing has not only to do with Zotero, but also with NoScript.
    * When only Zotero is active, I can access the German Wikipedia just fine.
    * When only NoScript is active, I can access the German Wikipedia just fine.
    * When both Zotero and NoScript are active, Firefox crashes when accessing the German Wikipedia.

    Hm!
  • Yeah, people have run into problems with NoScript before (though a Firefox crash is generally a Firefox bug).

Since the upcoming Zotero 5.0 will be Standalone-only, your best bet is just to install Zotero Standalone 4.0 and the new Zotero Connector for Firefox (which all existing Zotero for Firefox users will be upgraded to soon anyway). (The 5.0 Beta on that page isn't necessary to use the new Firefox Connector.)
  • Yes, migrating to Zotero 5.0 could be an option, but not right now.

I just tried all the older NoScript versions back until 2.9.5.2 of November 2016, and they all exhibited the same behaviour. Since then I have definitely accessed the German Wikipedia, and more than once, so I suspect that your recent "innocent" change to the Zotero Firefox connector triggered the crash somehow.

For now, I have disabled NoScript, because I cannot do without Zotero! ;-)
  • FWIW, Dan wasn't suggesting you use the beta, but that you use Zotero Standalone stable (i.e. 4.0.29.xx) with the new Zotero connector for Firefox (which shouldn't be considered beta).
