Standalone installation error; Windows 7; requesting "Administrator"

I am attempting to switch from the Firefox add-on to standalone Zotero, because Mozilla keeps incentivizing me to switch away from Firefox.

All of the following takes place in Windows 7 32-bit.

I downloaded the *.exe from this website; but when I try to run it, it extracts, and then opens a window asking for an administrator login. I am logged in as the only administrator on this machine. When I select current user, the process for this *.exe disappears from Windows Task Manager; if I try the "Administrator" user, there is no functional password for it.

How do I actually install Standalone?
  • This is more likely than not a user configuration problem on your machine. Pretty much any software you could install requires Administrator privileges, which your user may have lost somehow (it's not exactly unheard of for user privileges to randomly go corrupt on Windows).

Are you sure you can install other software on the machine?
  • Thank you for responding; this is the first time I've had trouble. The next time something (other than firefox) needs an update, I'll see....
