Color coding

Is there a way to color-code entries in the Zotero database? I'm hoping this would help project management and workflow. I'm looking for a way to visually organize elements I have recently added in terms of pertinence and whether they have been read or not.
A search for color (with and without "tag") in the forums seems to reveal some threads that make mention of color tagging for the central pane but I haven't found anything to that effect in the Firefox interface.

Can you explain what you mean with "Firefox interface"? You can assign colored tags to items, which indeed only show up in the middle pane of Zotero. See https://zotero-manual.github.io/zotero-manual/tags#colored-tags

Oh, you mean your online Zotero library? No, it doesn't look like colored tags are supported there.

Colored tags don't appear to work on Chrome. Am I missing something?

@dstembridge: You'd have to say more. First, you're referring to the web library, not Zotero itself? Colored tags will display in the web library, but you can't assign them there. For full functionality, use the Zotero program.

Sorry @dstillman , I was using the Mac program (v. 5.0.92) not the web app. I actually started with the program not even knowing there was a web app!

I can't seem to pull up the menu that states "rename" and gives the option to assign color to tags.

Are you seeing the tag selector on the left of the app? https://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags#colored_tags
It's still not clear to me where you're getting stuck.

I see a tag selector on the right of the app. Is there a way to attach a photo to threads?

No, the tag selector is in the bottom left. On the right is just the tag box for an individual item — you can't assign colors there, because colors are global for the library, not item-specific. See the screenshot in the documentation adamsmith linked to, or the screenshot on the front page.
