Zotero no longer saves Pubmed abstracts or any website

What do you mean by "doesn't work"? We'll likely need an example URL and a Debug ID from the connector, not from Zotero.

Though if you're using Zotero for Firefox with Zotero Standalone, you won't be able to generate that, so just close Standalone for now and generate a Debug ID for trying to save (or load the page, if the translator icon isn't appearing) from Zotero for Firefox alone.
  • I have not opened Zotero standalone. I have loaded Zotero firefox. I tryed to save a Pubmed entry while using the debug as usual but nothing is entered on the debug page. Its just blank. So nothing to send to debug report. But the Pubmed document is not saved to the open Zotero folder . It is not saved anywhere else either. Thanks .

    1) Start debug output logging.

    2) Load the page you're trying to save.

    3) Try to save.

    There will definitely be output.
  • 1.Started debug output logging in Zotero firefox.
2.Opened Pubmed reference I want to save.
3.Tried to save. A window appears saying "saved in my library"
then another window appears giving the title of the paper saved
But the reference is not saved to the open folder and
    4. 0 lines are saved i.e. no debug output that can be submitted !
    I repeated with Zotero standalone
The Pubmed reference is not saved to the folder bu this time there is a debug output which I submitted
    D713102702.
I clicked the sync icon as per debug instructions but the issue is not resolved.
This time I get a blank output in the debug report (0 lines)
  • If you get the title of the item, it is saving somewhere. This is in Firefox?
  • Yes using firefox , using either zotero firefox or zotero standalone, something is saved -it says in My library-the title of the saved paper is given- but nothing is saved in my library or to the selected folder or any other folder. There is no debug output , 0 lines.

You provided a Debug ID from Standalone. We need a Debug ID from Firefox with Standalone closed.

Oh, you said there was no output, but that's just not really possible, unless there's some extraordinary problem that no one has ever reported before. Simply loading a page in Firefox with Standalone closed generates dozens of lines of debug output.

If you really think there's no output, at least provide a Report ID from Zotero for Firefox.

Just because this is so weird. Would you mind posting a screenshot of your library in Zotero for Firefox open at the bottom of your window to a free image hosting site and linking to it from here?
I don't care about the content of the library, so if you want that private, feel free to put black boxes over the left and center pane, but I would like to see the browser window with Zotero open at the bottom to make sure we're talking about the same thing.
  • Here is the screen shot of the zotero firefox with firefox in the background.
Not something I'm used to doing but hope it works.

  • sorry, that link doesn't work
  • right, so you're still looking at Zotero Standalone. Zotero for Firefox looks like this: http://imgur.com/a/4mZrO
you open it by making sure Standalone is entirely closed/quit and then clicking on the Z icon at the top right of Firefox.
  • Thanks for reply. Problem was that I started Zotero firefox as a command from my pc "zotero firefox". So I have done what you originally suggested. Make the Zotero database the same place in the Zotero stand alone and the Zotero firefox. I could not sync Zotero firefox with Zotero standalone(which contains all my references). So I have deleted Zotero firefox and reinstalled it. However I still cannot sync the contents of the Zotero standalone with Zotero Firefox. The error report cannot be sent to the server the adress is not recognised. Here is the error report which could not be sent.

  • I think you need to re-read https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/sharing_data_directory
the point is not to _sync_ Firefox and Standalone versions, but to set them up so that they use the same data directory. We can take a look at the sync error separately, but you'll want to fix this first, as it's almost certainly the cause of the problem here.
  • I'm having the same problem. After using Zotero successfully for years, I installed the standalone on my MacBook then the recommended Firefox addon. I was not prompted about sharing the data directory (so how would one know?) and I'm unable to follow the instructions on the link you provide since the Show Data Directory path isn't a real path (it points to folders that don't exist). Is standalone no longer recommended/supported? Is there an earlier version I can revert to ?
  • The folders in the path definitely exists, though they may be hidden (see e.g. here: http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/how-show-hidden-files-library-folder-mac-3520878/ ).

This has worked this way since the first version of Standalone, so no need or reason to revert to anything.

If you find this too cumbersome, you could instead just use Chrome?
  • Okay, I found the option to show the library folder that by default does not show (I guess I should have known that?). But when I add in the new custom directory, it doesn't take. When I quit (as prompted) and open Firefox again, the Firefox-Zotero still points to the same directory.
  • that's quite odd. You've tried this again for good measure? Anything unusual about your set-up? E.g. do you have the Standalone data directory in a custom location e.g. on an external harddisks or the like? Normally you also should have, of course, been prompted to share the data directory, so something appears off
  • (you could alternatively also just switch to the Zotero beta: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/59829/zotero-5-0-beta the Firefox add-on for that -- available via https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/267549/#Comment_267549 -- doesn't have its own database anymore, so this problem can't occur anymore)
  • I think I figured it out. In the files and folders tab, I was selecting "choose" which is to the right of where one would enter the custom path. This lets me choose a path but it doesn't take. I had to select the bubble next to "custom" then the path I selected was permanent.
  • ah yes -- that could be. Sounds like bad user interface behavior -- this should probably toggle automatically toggle to custom when you set a custom folder via choose.
  • this should probably toggle automatically toggle to custom when you set a custom folder via choose
(Pretty sure that's fixed in 5.0.)
