Error ID 1388859317

Description of problem:

When I click Zotero Insert Citation button I am getting the following message:

D:\Program Files\Zotero Standalone\zotero.exe
Zotero experienced an error updating your document.
An unhandled exception occured. [setText:field.cpp]'An unhandled exception occured. [setText:field.cpp]' when calling method: [zoteroIntegrationField::setText]

Same problem occures, when I use Firefox plugin without Zotero Standalone

Similar problems again and again (from error logs)

I don´t have chrome on my PC., only Firefox. I guess, the problem could be line with file: "chrome://zotero/.....
The second problem could be cause by following row in installation log:

** ERROR Registering: D:\Program Files\Zotero Standalone\AccessibleMarshal.dll **

My system: Windows XP SP3 x86, Firefox 48.0.2 (I cannot upgrade due SSE processor), Zotero 4.0.29.17

Thank you for your help

  • (chrome is a Firefox protocol also used in Zotero Standalone; nothing to do with the browser)

This happens in a fresh document? Which Word version?
  • "chrome" in the URLs just points to the code of the application (firefox or zotero standalone respectively). Not related to google chrome.

Is this a new problem with an existing document? Does a fresh document work fine? What version of word is it?

We will be discontinuing support for Windows XP shortly, as most of the software world has/is discontinuing support, including the tools we use to build Zotero, so be aware, that we might not be able to fix this if it's an XP problem.

If integration works fine with a fresh document you should try debugging your existing document. If you isolate a problematic citation with technique 8, do email it to support@zotero.org, so we can take a look.

If integration doesn't work for a fresh document, could you submit a Debug ID performing the problematic operation with a fresh document?
  • Thank you for your reply. I use Word 2003. Both (fresh and old document) are affected. Debug ID (fresh document) is D672389175.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Did this begin happening recently? Were there any system changes (big software installs or updates) on your machine recently?
  • Zotero worked flawlessly a few months ago, but when I tried it a few weeks ago, it was corrupted. One of the most significant changes during last months was installation und unistallation of Nero 7 Essentials.

Thank you for your reaction and help

I know this. Nero made many unexpected changes to the association behavior of file extensions. Nero made changes to directory permissions. Nero did a poor job of self-unstalling and the Windows add/delete programs uninstall was even less complete.

Nero places several programs in the startup folder and doesn't remove all of them when it is uninstalled. Nero made changes to certain DLLs and didn't return them to original status. Thus, even when you restart your machine there will be remnants of Nero that will run in the background.

A few years ago we had a Nero problem on one of our computers and Google search found there were several sets of recommendations/instructions for completely removing the program. Key parts of these instruction sets differed/conflicted.

Be sure to make backups of your document, photo, and video folders -- remember that some versions of Nero moved files to its own locations if the file was accessed. Do not just delete things that look Nero-related. If you do you may delete wanted files.

I recall that it was necessary to do a full reinstall of Office--- Beware-this may be a problem for you because your system is old. Microsoft programs then worked but there were other problems. We were unable to use a couple of custom programs on that computer and finally ended up clearing the disk, reinstalling the OS and everything else before we could run them again. I confess that I wanted to do violence to Nero developers.
  • Thank you for your comment, but I don´t encounter any other problems with other programs (QGSIS, MS Office, Blender, Gimp, Google Earth, Stellarium and many more). Is there any list of DLL´s, which are used by Zotero? I can try to fix it manually. Reinstallation of OS would be horrible solution.

    Best regards

  • The debug log shows that there is some successful communication between Word and Zotero, but it fails while trying to set citation text in the document. This is the only report of this problem we have received (I believe ever) and most likely related to some change on your system (which may or may not be Nero's fault).

This is not normally recommended, but reinstalling Zotero, Zotero word integration plugin and perhaps even Office could help. Otherwise, I am afraid we won't be able to fix this on our end.
