protecting and backing up files

Hi, I'm a brand new user and am creating a database I'd like to maintain for others to use and build on, potentially for years to come. As I work, I'm finding it's very easy to delete files -- perhaps too easy. So far I haven't found answers to the below questions, but please point me to a relevant thread or knowledge base section if I've missed it.

-Is there any way to "lock" or otherwise protect files and their contents so they cannot be deleted or altered?

-Is there an easy way to create a second, backup copy of a top-level folder with its nested subfolders and contents so in case I screw up royally, I've got my work saved elsewhere?

-Is there any way to undo a deletion?
