Merging documents and keeping references

Hi there,

I'm having an issue when putting together chapters from my thesis. I've tried a couple of different things but not sure what's wrong.

I can copy from the original document and paste it into the new document (which already has references and thus a reference style). The numbers of the paper (Nature style) appear but when I click insert bibliography/refresh it doesn't include these added references or change the numbers. This is all in word and I made sure to save both file types as .doc.

From the document I'm copying in the "document preferences" you can't click on the option to save the references in the document (it's already ticked and grey so you can't select/deselect it). The destination document is fine and it's selected. Both documents are saved as "bookmarks".

Perhaps it's losing a link and doesn't see it as a zotero reference when I copy and paste? I'm not sure what's wrong. Any help would save me a lot of time.

Thanks,
C
  • Are the references "live" and connected to Zotero in both original documents? Are you using Word or LibreOffice?
  • Yes in the original documents I can actively change the references. I am using Word.
  • If you switch to Fields instead of Bookmarks (which is generally recommended unless you have to move between Word and LO), does copying work?
  • I just switched both documents to Fields and it worked! Thank you!!
