IDEA - automatically find of related document

I very often solve this situation. I find an interesting paper on the Internet and importing them into the Zotero. In next steps, I read references in the downloaded document an if I find some interesting or important references, I import them too. Unfortunately, in a lot of cases, I find these documents in the duplicate items because I found and downloaded it sometimes before. For me will be a very interesting function if the Zotero try to find related documents in my database automatically. It can be done manually by searching for title, doi, ISBN (or another unique item) but the automatization of this will be welcome.

You could use the prevent duplicates plug-in. It works fine with Zotero 4.0, but is not compatible with 5.0 standalone. Discussed here: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/52608/future-direction-of-zotero-firefox-add-on#latest

Pre-import duplicates detection is planned in some form, but no ETA on when it might be implemented.

I am sure this was considered, but since the prevent duplicates works so well, would it be easier to integrate that code directly in Zotero 5.0? I understand that might still mean substantial work, but maybe a bit easier than writing something from scratch?

(given that 5.0 is Standalone only and prevent duplicates is Firefox add-on only, this requires pretty much a complete re-write anyway, unfortunately)
