Upgrade StorageZotero hanging on most actions

I've been having issues with Zotero running very slowly for some time now. I am running Zotero in Firefox and on Standalone, with a library of about 7500 items (about 25% of which have attached PDFs). Data directory is not the default but is on my local drive, not Dropbox or similar, though my PDFs are all stored in a Dropbox folder. I have submitted a debug report (D297071717) logging opening up FF and Zotero, searching for an entry, adding tags, then adding a new entry from JSTOR and attaching a PDF.
I am finding now that for most actions in Zotero I get the Mac spinning wheel for at least 5 seconds, often more. I have a *lot* of tags, but I keep the tag window closed. Any suggestions or advice would be very gratefully appreciated.
