Using more than one reference

In my dissertation, I sometimes need to use more than one reference for the sentences. How do I get a group of references: (Helfrich et al., 2011; Snyder & Fields, 2006; Yang, Kankanhalli, & Chandran, 2015) for example. I had to do quite a bit of manipulation to get this right. I there an easier way to get this?

Also, generally you want to avoid any manual editing of citations outside the Zotero add-on. It'll mess with updating the citations themselves as well as the ability to change citation styles.
