Can't find any information either in docs or forum about keeping account profile private. I can see the option to stop profile being indexed, but nothing on keeping it private. Is it then a case of simply removing all personal information from the profile while keeping the username indexed?

Correct. The only function of the profile is to serve as a public-facing profile for you. Don't include any information you don't want displayed publicly.
