pdf files locked

After switching to a new computer and synchronizing my Zotero library, I can no longer modify my saved pdf files (by highlighting them, for example). If I try to do so, Zotero attempts to create a new copy of the file in a different location.
How can I recover my full access to the saved pdf files of my references?

    which operating system, what PDF reader? (Zotero doesn't handle file access and permissions, this is something either your OS and/or PDF reader prevents)

    Thanks, very helpful. I changed the default pdf viewer from Preview to Adobe and all works well now !

    (Note that, after the upcoming Zotero 5.0, which will automatically move your Zotero data directory out of the Application Support directory, you can change it back to Preview. You could also move your data directory now if you wanted to, but it's probably easier to wait.)
