Show "Idem" when citing multiple sources

Problem:
I am using SBL footnoting. When I cite different works/book titles by the same author using multiple sources, the author's name appears for each work.

Example:
John Smith, Designing Robots (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2015); John Smith, Redesigning Robots (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2016); John Smith, Trashing Robots (Grand Rapids, Eerdmans, 2017).

Question:
How can I make the full name appear only for the first work cited and then "Idem" in place of the last name for the second and third (and fourth...) works?

Example:
John Smith, Designing Robots (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2015); Idem, Redesigning Robots (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2016); Idem, Trashing Robots (Grand Rapids, Eerdmans, 2017).
  • You can't really. The only way would be to use "suppress author" for the 2nd etc. one and then add Idem., as a prefix.
That said, it is my understanding that contrary to the one stray example on page 56, SBL 2nd edition, in line with the 16th edition of the Chicago Manual on which it is based, does advise against using idem.
See https://sblhs2.com/2016/10/11/placement-citations-traditional/ which I believe is the official site/blog accompanying the manual.
