"note too long" now won't sync

I use standalone and the online versions...I have two collections and when I added a third, the sync stopped working. In the standalone version I can no longer see any collections (just blank). I can see both collections (the first two) in the online Zotero. The error message is:

The note '

<img src="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAA…' in your library is too long to sync to zotero.org. Shorten the note, or delete it and empty the Zotero trash, and then try syncing again.

I emptied the trash (only 4 items); I have about 200 items in one collection and a dozen in the other. I inadvertently went over the 300 mb free limit when I made the third library so I thought that might be the problem (as the problem with note length was not flagged prior to this happening). I bought extra storage but still cannot sync. How do I find the note that is flagged as being 'too long' (If this is the problem)? Thanks for your help.

  • report ID was 1050549639...forgot to add that...
  • You should be able to just paste "data:image" into the search bar in the root of your libraries in All Fields & Tags mode.

(Zotero 5.0, which will be out soon, will prevent images from being dragged into notes to avoid this problem, and we're hoping to have proper support for embedded images at some point.)
  • the error message means what it says -- it's usually triggered by trying to paste an image into a note. You'll have to find the note (by searching for the first bit provided in the error message) and delete or shorten it.
  • I am having a similar difficulty, but I cannot find the note. The error reads: "The note “” is too long to sync. Shorten the note and sync again". When I click on "Show Item in the Library", it doesn't go to any item. I have a few thousand items, and apparently one of them has a long note, but I can't find it. Searching for "data:image" didn't bring anything up. Ideas for finding it?
  • Start by emptying your Zotero trash. If that doesn't help, provide a debug ID for a failed sync: https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
  • Thank you for the help! Done and done. Through looking through the Debug output log, I found the folder name of the offending file. When I deleted that, I was then able to sync.
