Feature request: Chicago and ebook vs paper books

I'm struggling with how to deal with citing ebooks and paper books using the single Zotero "Book" item type. The problem is becoming more acute since Chicago 16 calls for different usage of URLs for the two formats:

"When citing electronic sources consulted online, Chicago recommends—as the final element in a citation that includes all the components described throughout this chapter and in chapter 15—the addition of a URL or DOI....Publishers of printed books, on the other hand, may require a URL or DOI only in citations of sources that may otherwise be difficult to locate."

"For electronic books consulted online, a URL or DOI, or, for other types of electronic books, an indication of the medium consulted (e.g., DVD, CD-ROM); see 14.4–13"

However, since Zotero lumps both together in the "book" category, it's creating this need to hack paper book records in Zotero and put the URL into the Call Number or Archive field to suppress it from exporting.

This is particularly problematic when importing metadata from a library catalog. For my own personal benefit, it's useful to capture the library catalog URL, but it's not useful to have it display in a bibliography.

Would it be possible to do any of the following:

1. Create two different item types, one for paper books, and one for ebooks?
2. Make the URL an optional field, and have a checkbox in the Word plugin for "Suppress URL", similar to the "Suppress author" checkbox?
3. Replace the single URL field with two new fields: "Catalog record URL" and "Full text URL"?
  • The ability to attach links to items (which will never display in bibliographies) is designed for things like links to library catalog entries. You can use "Attach link to Current Page" or "Attach link to URI" from the paperclip menu.

Where an item has no attachment, URL, and DOI, doubleclicking the parent item will open the link (as will, obviously, clicking the link item directly)
