cannot extract highlighted text in Skim

I am using the newest version of zotfile on MacOS Sierra. I am using Skim as my default PDF reader. I can highlight text in the PDF, but when I try to extract highlighted text as notes in zotero, it does not work. I am sure that I can copy the text out of PDF and paste it in Word. Any suggestions?

    Skim uses a non-standard method to store annotations that is not compatible with Zotfile or any other PDF reader. Unfortunately, there is no way to use Skim in combination with Zotfile.

    (Such support is theoretically possible, I believe, but would require a large amount of programming, and the Zotfile developer does not currently have the resources to add new features.)
