Source in Zotero doesn't appear in MS Word plug-in

Hi,

I've been uploading sources to Zotero and then using the MS Word plug-in to insert them into my document. For a few sources that I've uploaded, I can't get them to appear using the Word plug-in. I try typing the first few letters of the author or the title, and other sources appear but not the ones I'm trying to use.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on how to resolve this!

  • If you use the classic view of the add citation dialog (you can get to it by clicking on the small arrow/triangle on the left of the red add citation search box), can you see the items in your library then?
  • That works - thanks!!
  • then this isn't working in Zotero as it should. Could you help out by providing the following:
    1. The version of Zotero you're using
    2. The version of the Word add-on (listed under addons in Zotero/Firefox)
    3. One or two citations that you weren't able to find using the regular add-on.
  • sure

    1. Zotero version 4.0.29.16

    2. Zotero Word for Mac Integration version 3.5.14 (last updated July 28, 2016 - the day I installed it, I believe)

    3. https://www.zotero.org/groups/277937/items/collectionKey/ENGATR3F/itemKey/H6DSBCC5

    and

    https://www.zotero.org/groups/277937/items/collectionKey/ENGATR3F/itemKey/NSDX3MZJ

In case it's helpful, when these cites populated using the classic view, they showed up as no date (n.d.). When I first added them and clicked edit to modify the source information, I didn't see a field for date. Maybe this is related?

    Thanks!

  • Ah -- the quick format add-on doesn't let you cite top-level attachments. I can't actually look at these (your library is private), but you want to attach these to a Zotero item (right-click --> create parent item in the Zotero software. Harder to do on the website), where you can add title, date, author, etc. You would then be able to normally cite them.
  • Hmm...I'm able to edit and add date, etc. that way (thanks for the tip!), but when I populate the citation in Word, it still says "n.d." (even though the date appears now as 2016 in Zotero).
  • Zotero treats the attachment and the item as separate entities. You need to delete and re-insert the citation for it to actually cite the item with all the information.
