Word for Windows Plugin

Hello,

I am testing the Zotero Word for Windows Integration 3.5.6 add on extension along with the Zotero 4.0.29.16 add in for my customers. I have installed the Zotero 4.0.29.16 successfully and see the Z button on my toolbar. However, when I install the Zotero Word for Windows Integration 3.5.6, I do not see the Addin Tab in Word. I am installing it on a Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 with Microsoft Office 2013. When I open a blank Word document, I can go to the File>Options>Add-Ins and I'm able to see the Zotero.dotm. It is also located under Appdata>Roaming>Microsoft>Word>Startup. I have also tried to manually install it from some of your troubleshooting advice. I still do not see the Addin Tab in Word with the Zotero button. Are these two extensions compatible with each other or with my firefox. I currently have Mozilla Firefox 45.5.0 installed on my computer. Please assist me in getting this to install correctly or find the problem with why it is not showing in Word 2013.

Thanks,
gerouxh
  • On Word 2013/2016, Zotero would be in a "Zotero" tab, not an Addin tab. Are you not seeing that either?
(compatibility is not an issue here).
If you click on the "Developer" tab in Word and then on "Document Templates" -- is Zotero listed? Is it checked?
  • Hello Adamsmith,

Sorry, from what I read it was said to be in the Addin Tab.

Once I added the Developer tab to the customized ribbon, I was able to click on the Document Templates and I do see that Zotero is checked.
  • And you don't see a Zotero tab still? That's very odd.
  • No, I do not see a Zotero tab.
  • Is Zotero.dotm listed under Add-ins in the Word options? (File --> Options --> Add-ins)? Have you tried restarting Word after any changes you may have made? You're sure the Tab isn't just off the screen (it's all the way to the right)?
It's very, very strange that it wouldn't show when enabled in Word -- I don't believe we have ever seen that.
  • Yes, Zortero.dotm is listed under the Add-ins in the Word options. I have restarted Word multiple times afterwards and tried restarting the whole computer as well. Thinking something might be hung up. I still don't see the tab and I have maximized the page to make sure I wasn't missing it.

I'm installing it on a Government computer and something might be blocking it but I have installed extensions and add-ons before without anything blocking it. I'm not sure why it isn't working. That is why I wanted to reach out to you. I have screen shots, if you want to see them. Thanks!
  • In the Developer Tab under "Macros", can you select Zotero.dotm in the "Macros in" dropdown menu? If so, what happens when you select and run the "ZoteroAddEditCitation" macro?
  • I get a window for Document Preferences
  • It then seems to let me add a citation. Would I need to do this every time I want to add a citation?
  • OK, so the macros work (and connect to Zotero). It's just the toolbar that doesn't show (obviously you wouldn't want to manually run the Macro to do this).
Some screenshots of Word might be helpful if you don't mind (upload anywhere - dropbox, imgur.com, etc. - and link to here).
I don't understand Word well enough to make sense of this. It should just show up and reliably does as far as I know.

  • I don't have authorization to go to these sites. They are blocked for us. Is there another way I can send them to you?
  • If not, I will try to figure something out.
  • since many of the folks who might be able to work (me included) don't work for Zotero, uploading them _somewhere_ would be great, and if it's an FTP server.
  • thanks -- this all looks exactly right to me except for the missing tab. Someone with a deeper understanding of Word templates/security settings would have to look at this.
It's obviously possible for you to add buttons for those Zotero macros manually, but that shouldn't be necessary.
  • Ok, will someone else be contacting me then?
  • You could probably do more debugging to figure out where the problem is:

    1. See if other Word add-ins install and appear correctly
    2. Try installing on a different machine with the same setup, if you have one available
  • I have installed a different add in and it installed appeared correctly.

I have installed it on a different computer and still have the same result.

Do you know of anything else, I can try? Thanks for your assistance.
  • I wanted to follow up and let you all know what my fix is to have the Add in and Zotero buttons show up in Word 2013. I wanted to install the stand a lone version just to see what it looks like and how it works. When I went into the Program Files>Zotero, I found a Zotero.dot in one of the folders. I copied this into my %appdata%>Roaming>Microsoft>Word>Startup folder. I then opened my Word and the addins tab was there along with the Zotero buttons. It seems like when I install the extension in Firefox, the only thing that installs in the Startup folder is the Zotero.dotm (which gives you the macros not the buttons) not the Zotero.dot which I needed to give me the buttons. Hope this helps other users out there.
  • I'm really glad that worked, though the .dotm _should_ be the only thing that's needed for the buttons, too. I still have no idea why it's not giving you the buttons, but this seems like a good working solution.
  • I do have a separate question. For security reasons, we have to test all programs, etc. that get installed on computers and we cannot have them checking for updates automatically. Is there a way I can turn this feature off when installing the extensions so the users cannot turn them on? This may hinder us from approving them for using the extensions. Thanks!
  • I'm in a rush, so don't have time to look the exact name up, but if you search in about:config (for standalone you can get there from the advanced tab of the preferences) for update the relevant hidden preferences come up.
  • How about just for the extensions in Firefox? Those are the ones that we will be using. The Zotero and Zotero Word for Windows Integration.
  • That would be extensions.update.enabled for all add-ons or:
    https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/how-to-turn-off-add-on-updates/#comment-215260 for Zotero specifically.
Note, though, that the fully functional Firefox add-on will disappear within the next year or so (and be replaced with a connector that works with Standalone), so it may be worthwhile exploring Standalone from the start.
