Style Request: Promotion Uni Heidelberg (German)

Hello,

I have a style request for the doctor title/PhD in medicine (in german: Promotion / Dissertation) at the University of Heidelberg.
The University offers styles in endnote (http://www.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/schulung/literaturverwaltung/endnote/zitierstile/Welcome.html -> click "Medizin: deutsche Version) and citavi (http://www.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/schulung/literaturverwaltung/citavi/zitierstile/Medizinische-Fakultaet_Heidelberg_DE.ccs).

Is there any way to transform these styles to a zotero style? Or would a whole new style have to be written for zotero? And is someone willing to do this for my unique request?

Thank you in advance and best greetings,
Jonathan

Unfortunately no, there's no way to convert Endnote or Citavi styles to CSL and I'd be skeptical if there's anyone willing to do this for free. The volunteers who do this (including me) generally prioritize journal styles or major style manuals.
You could try to do it yourself:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step
or try to convince the department to add one (which would also work for Mendeley, Paperpile and more than 20 other programs and services),
or talk to your adviser if they would be willing to accept your dissertation in a different style (which the page says is possible) such as the "Vancouver" style used in most medical journals.
  • Thank you very much for your quick reply. I thought so, that this request itself is very unique in order to be written anew. Thank you for the advice. I found another style "Universitätsmedizin Göttingen" which seems to be also for german medical papers from a different university. I think I will start working with this and then maybe edit it later on.
  • (FWIW, Uni Goettingen commissioned that style, IIRC through their medical librarian)
  • Hi GrossJ.
I am facing the same problem and dont want to use EndNote. Are their any developments since your last email ? Thank you

    Hi,
It's a pretty simple style. If you can adapt the two citations outlined here to fit the format of the style, then we can have a look: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/wiki/Requesting-Styles
I return I'd like you to do two things though: Write an article for your student magazine about Zotero (and/or Mendeley, Papers etc which also use the CSL styles) and that there is now a style in the repository for the University of Heidelberg.
Get a link to the style on that page you linked up there so people see that on an ongoing basis.
  • Sounds like a good deal. Ok will do
  • Where do you want me to send the style specifications? Thank you
  • You can just post them here.
  • I have created a PDF file and can send this also to your email Adress, if this would make thins easier. Unfortunately all the rules are in german, but I have translated them. If you need the original website, please look http://www.medizinische-fakultaet-hd.uni-heidelberg.de/fileadmin/Dekanat/Abfassungsrichtlinien_Sept_2015.pdf

The related department at the University of Heidelberg offers in their website the download of the Endnote and Citavi styles. I wrote an email to them trying to inquire if they would be willing to link also a Zotero CSL download, since I think there are a lot of people asking about this.

    * “und” meaning and in german
    * "Hrsg. meaning Herausgeben (Publisher) in german

    Citations in the text:

All detailed sources will be gibe at the end in form of a Bibliography (Harvard system). Within the text, there will be only a reference to the Bibliography. In the text there will be only a short reference to the Bibliography (Author(s) and the year). If there are more then two Authors, the abbreviation “et al.” will be used.

    (Adam 1985) ... (Adam und Müller 1990) ... (Adam et al. 1991)

    Organisation of the Bibliography:
All references have to be cited completely, i.e. name of Author and all Co-Authors, year of the publication, Titel, Titel of the Journal, issue, first and last page. All Co-Authors have to be included with the complete surename and the initials of the first name Abbreviations like: “Müller H, Meyer R et al” are not allowed in the Bibliography part.

The Bibliography is always organized alphapebtically according to the Authors surnames. The first name is always after the Surname. The first rule for organization is the surname of the first Author. If the Surnames are the same, the second rule for sorting is the first name of the Authors. If this is also equivalent, the rule for sorting is the date of publishing. If this is also equal, the differentiation is made by adding a small letter (eg. 1995a, 1995b)
For abbreviations of journals, the official abbreviations for the National Library of Medicine (NLM, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals ) are used.
    Digital Sources:
Newer digital documents usually have a DOI (digital object identifier). This DOI can be added at the end of the reference, separated by a comma.
Following information should be included for internet-citations:
    1) Name and First Name of Authors or publishing organization
    2) Complete Titel of the document
    3) Complete URL
    4) Download date in cling square []
In the Bibliography, the internet citations will be sorted according to the name of the Authors.

    @Burc1
Great stuff. I'll work on this over the next couple of days. I speak German, so no need for any translation.
Watch this space if we have some questions.
Are all of the theses going to be written in only german or both german and English?
  • Wow how lucky am I.... Thanks a lot. I will watch this space. The thesis are usually in german and english. For EndNote they offer german and english versions. I am currently in desperate need to the german version. Thanks a lot...

    @Burc1
Have a look and give this style a go and test it out.
It works for both german and english. no default language is set. In Mendeley you can choose the language. Not sure how that's done in Zotero. I don't use that.
    https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/pull/2517
Let us know if there is some mistakes and we weed them out.
  • (Language can be chosen in the Document Preferences window of Zotero word processor plugins or in the Export tab of Zotero Preferences.)
  • You guys are really awesome.. I followed the link and saw the code. I have no experience with Github and couldn't really figure out, how to download this as a csl file... I would appreciate any assistance. I will test to style and give feedback ASAP... You guys are amazing, thanks a lot!
  • One method is, go here: http://editor.citationstyles.org/visualEditor/
Copy the code into the Code Editor, switch to the visual editor and click on save on the left and it's pretty self-explanatory.
  • edited February 20, 2017
Easier, just download the file from here and save as a .csl file:
    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/damnation333/styles/189244c373ec65309197dde8cd44b32384731553/heidelberg-university-faculty-of-medicine.csl

Install it in Zotero and test it out.
  • Wow... I am really impressed.. So far it looks perfect. Can I ask for one minor modification? While citing in the text, it does (Campbell und Pedersen 2007).. Is it possible to get a comma between the author and the year, like (Campbell und Pedersen, 2007) ? If this is too cumbersome though, I can also add it manually later. Will test the code further now...Thanks for the great work...

    @Burc1
The guideline doesn't specify a comma there, so why do you want one?
  • yeah... just checked it again. You are completely right... Was misguided by the EndNote style they provided. Will continue to check, but looks great until now, thanks again
  • In Mendeley you can choose the language. Not sure how that's done in Zotero. I don't use that.
Well, nobody's perfect :). https://www.zotero.org/blog/zotero-4-0-27-streamlined-saving-easier-bibliography-language-selection-and-more/ has some discussion on how you can choose languages in Zotero. (unlike in Mendeley, you can't override the locale of CSL styles that have a specified locale in Zotero)

  • @damnation
Hey, I just wanted to say thank you so much for providing this citation style! Helped me a lot :)
  • edited July 30, 2017
Thanks for everything... it works fantastic

@damnation Thank you for providing the style, I already know several people who will benefit from it. I just noticed that in one of four references (in the reference list), the doi is missing though it is provided (I use the Zotero desktop app)
However, I am aware that it has been 5 years - so just to document it and maybe someone has an idea how I might fix that on my own
  • Thank you, it works fine and the doi's are included in the reference list. Thank you for your quick answer!
PS: Just an explanation for the record on how to fix the error with the link (some might not have done that before): click on the link, copy the whole text then you can paste it in the Zotero Style Editor (https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step), save your new style and click on the saved file to load the new style (you have to have the Zotero desktop app)

There is actually 2 easier ways:

    1. Open Zotero, click on the link and Zotero will pick it up automatically (might not be picked up on certain setups)

    2. Right click on the link, Save link as..., install the file via a double click or the menu.
