Have confirmed and replicated following behavior.
Insert references. Save document. Close document. Open document. Field codes gone.
Which means no ability to edit references & bibliography after closing document. Is this behavior intended?

adamsmithThat'd be expected if you're saving as .doc or .docx; saving as .odt will keep reference marks intact.
